What is Freemasonry all about?
Freemasonry is the oldest and largest fraternal organisation in the world, with a history dating back to 17th century England. Today it is a modern society of men who maintain a principled way of life and provides a unique set of experiences that are rarely found elsewhere. Freemasons Victoria is an organisation of good men, supporting each other, their families and the community. Freemasons refer to themselves as a Fraternity because of the common friendship bond that exists between those who come together as equals.

At Freemasons Victoria, around 7000 members from all backgrounds, religions and nationalities share a common belief in a community built on our mission of true friendship, compassion and honesty. Members enjoy a sense of personal development through a commitment to charitable activities and community service that brings happiness to others.
We welcome like-minded people to participate in a lifelong journey with us.

Freemasons: A community-active organisation
Freemasonry has a universal belief that charity and benevolence are foundations of their teachings. Members are actively involved in a wide range of charitable and fundraising activities in their local communities. These often include those who help care for the young, vulnerable, disadvantaged and aged.
Freemasons Victoria also has a history of responding quickly to help those affected by natural disasters, with support funds frequently raised at Lodge dinner meetings, charity auctions and social nights. Freemasons Victoria is also clearly visible at field community fundraising activities including BBQs, fetes and fairs.

Tell me about Freemasonry Symbolism and Conventions
Centuries-old customs are unique to Freemasons and are used in symbolic ceremonies that hold significance within the fraternity. Specific ceremonial activities are typically linked with a new candidate’s initiation and progression (through ‘Degrees’) in their Freemasonry journey over time.
Ceremonies focus on themes of enlightenment, self-discovery and moral improvement. These are truly inspiring experiences and can include the use of symbols including the Square & Compass and other Stonemasonry tools.
Some facts about Freemasonry
Freemasonry is not a religion, nor is it some type of Secret Society. Freemasonry, its existence and work in the community has a high public profile. As it has been passed down from its origins in the Middle Ages, a few selected aspects of its activities at ceremonial level are considered confidential and are kept secret by members. For example, a few hand gestures and signs are displayed as modes of recognition during meetings only, and used solely as a ceremonial means of demonstrating that one is a Freemason when in Lodge meetings.

Much like the Stonemasons of the Middle Ages, who formed lodges to protect their skills and trade secrets to then pass on their knowledge to selected apprentices, Freemasons Victoria values a level of confidentiality and secrecy attached to convention and symbolism. Members are expected to respect these, primarily to preserve the integrity of its teachings and ceremonies.
